I have quite a few Makita tools already (which I’m very happy with), so naturally, I began my search with their line of miter saws. The Makita LS1219L is a real workhorse. It’s a 12-inch dual slide compound miter saw. Translation? Extreme versatility. This model is capable of miter cuts ranging from the 0-52˚ left and 0-60˚ right as well as bevel cuts from 0-45˚ left and right. This gives you the ability to perform a wide range of cuts, which means you can tackle pretty much any project.
This model also boasts a number of other great features including an independent laser for increased precision, electronic speed control, a powerful 15 amp direct drive motor and easy one-touch miter locks.
Makita LS1219L Review
Choosing the right miter saw for your needs and your projects can be a major challenge. The biggest hurdle is simply wading through the huge number of makes and models on the market. The best way to address this issue is to simply look past the marketing hype, and focus on the four most important criteria that go into selecting a miter saw:
- Type (basic miter, compound miter, sliding compound miter)
- Additional Features
What Type Of Miter Saw Makita LS1219L?
In the world of miter saws, flexibility reigns supreme. That’s why many buyers choose to go with dual slide compound miter saws like the Makita LS1219L. Miter saws in this class are very versatile and offer you the greatest flexibility in terms of cuts and angles that you can perform. You could go with a basic or standard compound miter saw, which will save you some money, however, in the long run, you may find yourself having to upgrade once you run into their limitations.
What is the Capacity of Makita LS1219L?
Many buyers choose to go with a 12 inch miter saw right from the start so that they have the most options in terms of what size materials they can work with. Models like the Makita LS1219L make a great choice if you decide to go that route. You could go with a smaller miter saw, such as an 8 inch or 10-inch model, and Makita makes these as well, however, you may run into a project where they simply can’t handle the size material that you’re working with. Going with a 12 inch model like the Makita LS1219L will ensure that you can always get the job done.
Should You Go Cordless?
The answer is: it depends. If you are planning on working in remote locations or anywhere else that doesn’t have reliable access to electricity, then it can be beneficial to go with a cordless miter saw. For most users, however, this is not the
case. Chances are whether you’re on the job site or in the shop, there is going to be easy access to an outlet nearby or within reach of an extension cord.
Cordless miter saws do give you extra portability, however, they have a serious drawback and that is, of course, the reliance on battery power. You will most likely need to purchase at least one spare battery so that you have it on hand if the saw goes dead halfway through the day, which it almost certainly will if it’s seeing any moderate or heavy use. Those extra batteries aren’t cheap and will significantly increase your cost of ownership when compared to a corded miter saw like the Makita LS1219L.
What Other Features Do You Need?
If you go with the Makita LS1219L, then the answer is none. Makita packed so many extra features into this model that it’s unreal. It has a retractable rear guard and triple gear system for increased vertical cutting capacity, an independent laser for increased precision, electronic speed control to maintain the constant speed while cutting, one-touch miter lock, see-through blade guard and many other bells and whistles.
How Much Should You Expect To Pay?
Considering how many features this model has, you would expect to pay out the nose, however, Makita priced this miter saw competitively enough that even amateur do-it-yourselfers should have no problem fitting it into their budget.
