A person can easily make a Magnetic Tool Holder following the steps described below.
1. The Arrangement of Required Materials
First of all, you need to make a list of the required materials to make it easy. Use old and busted metal shelves for this purpose. You can easily find this in your store room. To make the frame of the tool holder use fine pine boards. These pine boards give strength to the frame and are suitable. To make the board, use 1” pine board. It’s a perfect measurement. But you can make it more or less thick as you wish.
Next comes the most important material, magnets. You have to collect the perfect magnets that can hold your tools and provide a strong grip. For this purpose, rare earth magnets can be useful. You can find them easily from any super shops or warehouses. Buy rare earth magnet cups,anti-slip magnet discs along with the magnets. You need to pick them keeping the sizes of your tools in mind.
Next comes the fasteners. For this work, you will need Flat Head Screws, Self Tapping Metal Screws, Wood screws.
2. Extra Tools Needed for the job
In order to complete the job successfully, you will need some more tools like hand tools, power tools, supplies etc. If you are doing it by yourself without any helping hand, you will need a Clamp to hold the frame. In order to drill the groove for magnet cup use 7/8” Forstner bit and spade bit. The brush is needed for cleaning the mess.
3. Prepare the Shelf
At first, to clean the shelf, you have to use sandpaper and wire brush and knock off the rust on the shelf. Use rust paint to make it smooth and nice looking. Then comes the proses to make the frame.
To make the frame use pine boards. A nice built frame makes your tool holder look nice and also strong. Cut the boards according to the edges of the shelf. Use sandpaper to take off the saw blade marks and make it smooth.
Make holes drilled through the wood into the steel. Use Forstner bit to countersink the self-tapping screws. This will bite and hold onto the steel and will give a nice grip. Thus attach the wood frame around the shelf.
4. Attach the Magnet
After making the shelf take another piece of pine wood. Cut it leaving a full width around 5.5”.Taking this piece of wood and another 2” width piece of wood, cut them to the same length using the miter saw. This 2” wide piece will work as the back piece in which the magnets will be attached.
Mark these two pieces of woods as A piece and B piece. The 5.5” wide piece will be A piece and 2” wide piece will be the B piece. Now drill two holes about one inch from either end. Drill a nice hole for the magnet cups.
Using magnet cups you can strengthen the capability of the magnets by a factor of 4.If the magnets usually hold 22 Ibs using the cups they can hold around 88 Ibs. Place the magnet cups and fasten them with flat head screws. Piece B is ready.
Then come to piece A. Drill holes for your tools that are to be held. Both pieces were made sharp-edged. Put glue to fix both pieces. Before that place the magnets in the cups and stuck on anti-slip discs. The anti-slip discs will prevent the tool holder from slipping down.
After that stuck the holder on the rack.
